Patreon is a crowdfunding membership platform that provides business tools for creators to run a subscription content service, with ways for artists to build relationships and provide exclusive experiences to their subscribers, or “patrons”.

In the last decade there has been an enormous shift in our digital lives. First with the ability for anyone to create and share unique content on social media,  Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, just to name a few. Youtube being one of the most popular and fastest growing, the second highest rated search engine in the world ( Google being the first).

With 300 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every minute! Almost 5 billion videos are watched on YouTube every single day. YouTube gets over 30 million visitors per day. In an average month, 8 out of 10 18-49 year-olds watch YouTube.

This new ability created a whole new field of possible online income. Youtube and Adsense offered a way to monetize your video content, generating a second income stream. Followed quickly by mainstream advertising from fortune 500 companies.  For awhile it was good times for content creators.

THE YOUTUBE APOCALYPSE

It started when advertisers found their ads on a few disturbing videos from  ISIS and they didn’t want to be apart of that. A lot of companies pulled their ads from the platform which is bad for YouTube as a company. YouTube decided to give advertisers more control by categorizing videos into little categories such as “Family friendly” and they gave the advertisers little tick boxes to tailor their ads to the right kind of videos.

As a result, many Youtuber’s, large and small, have seen huge decreases in ad revenue and also many smaller creators have had their hopes and dreams destroyed when Youtube changed their Partnership policies and criteria.

 YouTube Partner Program

   New Requirements for monetization:
  • Have at least 1,000 subscribers.
  • Have at least 4,000 hours of watch time within the past 12 months.
  • Channel/content must adhere to the YouTube Partner Program policies, YouTube Terms of Service, YouTube spam policies, and the Community Guidelines.

Everyone with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours watch time had their monetization stopped.  These were literally pennies, nickels and dimes per 1000 views that we all worked hard for, that are now sitting in a account waiting until our channels catch up with the new requirements and unable to monetize any new videos.

This is why Patreon is so important to all of us, the artists and photographers and every other niche you can think of, because so many of us are working hard to create the things you want to watch. Creating how-to’s and video tutorials that help everyone learn something new and believe me it’s not easy or cheap. Even this simple blog post took hours of research.

Patreon also lets creators offer more exclusive content , BTS footage and much more for their patrons.

Not one of us are looking for handouts, we just want you, the consumers to know that in many cases a Patreon pledge or Amazon link purchase may mean the difference in their continued ability to produce more and grow as a creator, or shut down completely.

So next time you watch a Youtube video or read a blog, remember that the people behind the blog page or on the screen spend their own time, money and energy to create the things you enjoy and if you have the ability, consider supporting them, go and pledge a few dollars to let them know you care and that their work is appreciated.

Till next time, Keep the shutter rolling!

Shaun
