With its US box office hitting the 55 million mark, Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi adventure has reached the potential momentum to break the current October theater release record held by Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film “Gravity” (Cuarón 2013). Only $700,000 short of that mark, “The Martian” is showing no signs of losing speed before the final figures are in. For those for you that have been living under a rock, either on earth or any other planet, “The Martian” is a science fiction story about a failed manned mission to Mars or an astronaut presumed dead and left behind in the evacuation.
As we see late season films that challenge box office records emerge, it seems to be showing a sign that audiences are no longer pre-ordained for the historic “Summer Blockbuster Season. This could begin to change preconceived idea about marketing and target premier dates. Now more than ever the audience is ready to see more and more, high budget and better quality films all year round, instead of waiting for the standard spring, summer, winter releases. Now we know that we have a viable market during the “off” season and the audience will be ready, cash in hand.
