The latest trend of messing with the musical aspects of films is a growing concern.

Most recent of which is the re-release of Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film “Gravity” with the option to turn off Steven Price’s Oscar-winning score. Thus allowing the audience to “truly experience” the defying silence of space. This could become a new standard option in DVD and Blu-ray releases.

I have to make mention of the emotion that composers bring to the projects is, in my opinion, one of the most critical aspects of any film. Imagine   “Jurassic Park” without John Williams’s music carrying us thought the first time we looking upon the living fossil reaching up for the extra tasty leaves on the top of that tree. As for how this will impact us Full Sail students, I believe that we conduct our business as usual and if it becomes necessary to create a setting of the DVD to turn off the score, so be it. I, for one, am not going to let a small brand of nitpickers dictate to me the way I choose to create a film. I am aware of the wants and need of the audience and plan to use music to evoke emotion and carry the audience though the story. If some people want to go back to the days of silent film, I say, have fun.

The Martian on course for a Gravity-defying record

With its US box office hitting the 55 million mark, Ridley Scott’s Sci-Fi adventure has reached the potential momentum to break the current October theater release record held by Alfonso Cuarón’s 2013 film “Gravity” (Cuarón 2013). Only $700,000 short of that mark, “The Martian” is showing no signs of losing speed before the final figures are in. For those for you that have been living under a rock, either on earth or any other planet, “The Martian” is a science fiction story about a failed manned mission to Mars or an astronaut presumed dead and left behind in the evacuation.

As we see late season films that challenge box office records emerge, it seems to be showing a sign that audiences are no longer pre-ordained for the historic “Summer Blockbuster Season. This could begin to change preconceived idea about marketing and target premier dates. Now more than ever the audience is ready to see more and more, high budget and better quality films all year round, instead of waiting for the standard spring, summer, winter releases. Now we know that we have a viable market during the “off” season and the audience will be ready, cash in hand.
